Thursday casual ride

Where are the new riders? Too many times when I invite riders to our Tuesday group ride, it seems the 2 questions I am asked are how far do we ride? How fast do we go? Even if I downplay the distance and speed, it tends to freak out new riders. So other than throwing friends into the deep end of the pool, what are our options?

Gary Keck and John helped start a Thursday ride that starts at the store at 6:30 pm. It's a casual ride. Pace and distance are dictated by the abilities of the riders there. We have been coaching the new riders on cadence and shifting and riding in a group. I have been riding my Transend DX cruiser while wearing cargo shorts and a T-shirt to remind me to moderate my pace. I also think it reduces the intimidation factor for new riders to see you can ride with a group without having to wear our 'uniform'.

Bring a friend who is a new rider. Let's see if we can grow our cycling base here in town.

Nacho Ride .... July Now?

Following these first few sentences is information I posted about a ride that did not happen ... But it is not a failure yet, I want to try the ride again soon! I have either July 13 or July 20 in mind. Let me know if anyone is interested ... heck, let me know if anyone even reads this since Jason didn't even know I posted to the blog!! This should be a slow paced ride, anyone that is interested will not get left behind so invite people!

This idea requires a short road trip to Lincoln: Right now there are about five people from the Grand Island area that are meeting in Lincoln this coming Tuesday night (06.29.10). We are meeting at 84th and O to participate in the weekly "Nacho Ride." I have never done this ride but from what I have read I would recommend a mountain bike. It is ten miles to Eagle where a local bar has a nacho and taco night every Tuesday. Also in my reading I learned they have a good beverage selection! It sounds like most Lincoln locals head out around 5:30PM but from talking to others that have rode it before, people are still heading out when they are coming back in. I am planning on leaving the trailhead at 84th and O at 7:00PM to allow anyone that can leave GI around 5:00PM to make it. I am sure there will be several more trips this year if people are unable to make it. Let me know if you are interested and I will put people in contact with each other to car pool or make sure we don't leave without someone that wants to ride with the group.

Tuesday Night Ride

A nice wind from the East led the group ride out to the IAMS dogfood plant on Highway 34. Although there was scattered showers and super high humidity 5 of us still braved the elements and stopped by Nathan Detroit's for the usual post-ride ritual.

Urban Rides this summer!

This summer there are going to be several Urban Ride Events scheduled. These rides are NOT going to be "long-distance road rider events only" These urban rides are going to focus on fun! Here's the events that are going to be scheduled:

1. Schwinn Ride - If you have a Schwinn bike bring it out, but if not your still welcome, beach cruisers, single speeds, mountain bikes, or road bike, whatever you want to ride.

2. Pub Crawl - This ride will catch all the coolest places to get a cold one, all ages are welcome, we are going to only stop at watering holes that cater to all ages, Some favorites on the list are Chicken Coop, Sin City, and ending at Nathan Detroits, each location will have a drink special.
